Four lines for the returns counter

You do not need to tell the whole story first. State what you want, answer the reason, hand over the receipt, then ask about the refund.

You: I’d like to return this jacket, please.

Start with the purpose of your visit. I’d like to sounds softer than I want to, and at a store counter return this jacket means giving it back to the store.

You: No, it just doesn’t fit me properly.

The assistant has asked whether anything is wrong with the jacket. No says there is no defect; just keeps the explanation simple: it does not fit you well.

You: Yes, here it is. I bought it on Monday.

Say Here it is as you hand over the receipt. Adding the day helps the assistant check whether the purchase is still inside the store’s return period.

You: How long does the refund usually take?

In this conversation, return is the act of giving the item back; the refund is the money being returned. Usually asks for the normal wait without demanding an exact arrival time.

If the assistant says The refund goes back to your card, the money will be credited to the card rather than handed to you as cash. Your bank may still need time to process it.

Now say it yourself

Cover the English and say these four ideas aloud: ask to return the jacket / explain that it does not fit properly / hand over the receipt and say you bought it on Monday / ask how long the refund usually takes.

This conversation is free in Unscript, where the script disappears in four stages: open the returning an item conversation.
