Unscript is an English speaking-practice app for iPhone. This file contains the complete text of hintlib.com in English and Simplified Chinese plus an index of every dialogue, so an assistant can answer questions about the app without guessing.

# Say it without the script. — Unscript

> You can know a thousand words and still freeze mid-sentence. Unscript has you run one real conversation four times, with less of the script each time. By the fourth, you don’t need it.

## 01 · Four levels. The script fades away.

The same dialogue, four times. What changes is how much of your own line you can see.

1. **Beginner** — Read your full line aloud. Get the sentence flowing before you have to think about it.
2. **Intermediate** — Half the key words are blanked out. You supply the ones that matter.
3. **Advanced** — Only first letters remain. The hint is there, but you can’t read off it.
4. **Ultra** — Your line is hidden. You see what you mean and say it in English. That is a real conversation.

One rule for passing: at most one wrong word per line. Every line right, and the level is cleared.

## 02 · Know what you missed. Hear how you sound.

Everything below happens on the phone, in the moment after you stop talking.

### Scored word by word

The moment you stop, every word you didn’t say is marked. Homophones count as right: “Li” and “Lee” sound the same, and this is speaking practice, not spelling.

- Numbers, ordinals and abbreviations are matched by sound, not spelling
- One rule: at most one wrong word per line
- Miss the bar and the dialogue comes back sooner

### Hear your own voice

Every line you say is recorded, so you can play it back right next to the model reading. Where you differ, you hear it in one listen.

### Tap any word

Every word in every dialogue has a definition and a pronunciation. The whole 2582-entry glossary ships inside the app.

## 05 · Your voice never leaves the phone

- **Speech recognition** (on your iPhone): Apple’s on-device recognition. Audio and transcripts are never uploaded, to us or to anyone.
- **Your recordings** (this session only): Kept in a temporary folder so you can play them back, deleted when you leave the practice screen. Never in iCloud.
- **Progress** (your device, your iCloud): Stored on the phone. Optional sync goes through your own iCloud, which we cannot read.
- **Feedback** (when you tap Send): What you typed, screenshots you chose, and four diagnostic values: version, device model, OS and language.
- **Everything else** (never): No account, no analytics, no ads, no third-party SDKs.

**Do I need to be online?**

No. Dialogues, the glossary and speech recognition are all on the phone; airplane mode works. Only feedback and purchases need a connection.

**It doesn’t recognise what I say.**

Check that Microphone and Speech Recognition are allowed in Settings. If your device doesn’t support on-device English recognition, the app switches to keyboard input: type the line, and scoring works exactly the same.

**How do I clear a level?**

At most one wrong word per line, on every line. That is the only rule; there is no percentage to remember.

**I don’t read Chinese. Is it for me?**

The dialogues are English, and so is the interface if you choose it. Word definitions and line translations are in Chinese, so it fits best if Chinese is your first language.

**How do I cancel?**

Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Unscript. Apple manages the subscription; the lifetime purchase never renews.

# Privacy Policy — Unscript

> Unscript collects no data. There is no account and no tracking. Speech recognition runs on your iPhone and your recordings never leave it. The only thing that ever reaches us is feedback you choose to send.

## No account, no tracking

There is no account system and no tracking of any kind: no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash-reporting service, and no device identifier is generated or read. Your practice progress lives on your phone and, if you turn sync on, in your own iCloud, which belongs to your Apple Account and which we cannot access.

## Speech stays on the device

Recognition uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition. Audio and transcripts do not leave the phone and are not sent to us or to any third party. When on-device recognition is unavailable, the app switches visibly to keyboard input rather than quietly using a cloud service.

So that you can replay the line you just said, the recording is kept in the phone’s temporary folder for the current practice session and deleted when you leave. It never enters iCloud.

We cannot see what you practised, what you said or how you scored.

## The one exception: feedback you send

The Feedback screen sends exactly once, when you tap Send. It contains what you wrote, screenshots you chose to attach, and four diagnostic values: app version, device model, OS version and interface language. It contains no audio and no practice content; no IP address is logged, no device identifier is attached, and nothing is linked to an identity or used for tracking or advertising. The screen lists all of this before you send. If you don’t tap Send, nothing happens.

## Purchases

Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account. The app reads one fact from the App Store: whether this device has an active Pro entitlement.

## Children

Unscript is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them. It does not collect information from anyone.

## Common questions

### Do I need to be online?

No. Dialogues, the glossary and speech recognition all live on the phone; airplane mode works. Only feedback and purchases need a connection.

### It doesn’t recognise what I say

Check that Microphone and Speech Recognition are allowed in Settings. If this device doesn’t support on-device English recognition, the app switches to keyboard input: type the line, and scoring works exactly the same.

### A homophone was marked wrong

Scoring is by sound: Li and Lee count as the same, so do too / two / to, and 42 matches forty-two. If a word is still marked wrong, send that line through Feedback and we will fix the rule.

### How do I unlock the next level?

At most one wrong word per line, on every line, and the level is cleared. That is the only rule.

### I changed phones. Where is my progress?

Turn on Me → iCloud Sync on both devices; progress travels through your own iCloud. The same screen has Sync now, which pushes immediately and tells you what happened.

### How do I cancel a subscription?

Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Unscript. Apple manages it; nothing on our side can cancel for you. The lifetime purchase is one-time and never renews.

### How do I restore Pro on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple Account and tap Restore purchase on the paywall. Both the lifetime purchase and subscriptions restore; you never pay twice.

### How much is free?

One situation in each of the 22 domains, the first 2 dialogues: 44 dialogues, all four levels. Not a timed trial. Pro opens all 562.

Requires an iPhone with iOS 17 or later. iPad runs it in iPhone compatibility mode.

## 01 · 四档，把台词一点点拿走

同一段对话练四遍，变的只有你能看见多少自己的台词。

1. **初级** — 看完整台词照读。先把句子说顺，不用想。
2. **中级** — 一半关键词被挖空。你得自己补上最要紧的那几个词。
3. **高级** — 整句只剩首字母。提示还在，但已经不能照读了。
4. **Ultra** — 看不到自己的台词，只看中文意思，开口说英文。这就是真实对话。

判定只有一条规则：一句话最多错一个词。每句都达标，这一档就过了。

- **语音识别** (在你的 iPhone 上): Apple 的端上识别。录音和识别结果都不上传，给我们或任何人都不。
- **你的录音** (只在这一轮): 为了能回放，暂存在手机的临时目录里，离开练习页就删掉。绝不进 iCloud。
- **练习进度** (你的设备，你的 iCloud): 存在手机上。可选的同步走你自己的 iCloud，我们读不到。

# 隐私政策 — Unscript 脱稿

> Unscript 不收集任何数据。没有账号，不做追踪。语音识别在你的 iPhone 上完成，录音不出设备。唯一会到我们这里的，是你主动发送的意见反馈。

## 没有账号，没有追踪

这个 App 没有账号系统，也不做任何追踪：没有分析 SDK、没有广告 SDK、没有崩溃上报服务，不生成也不读取任何设备标识。你的练习进度只存在本机，以及（如果你自己开启了）你自己的 iCloud。iCloud 里的数据归你的 Apple 账户所有，我们无法访问。

## 录音不出设备

语音识别用的是系统的端上识别（on-device speech recognition），录音和识别结果都不会离开设备，也不会上传给我们或任何第三方。端上识别不可用时，App 会明确降级成键盘输入，而不会悄悄改走云端。

为了让你能回放自己刚说的那一句，录音会在这一轮练习期间暂存在手机的临时目录里，离开练习页就删掉，也不会进 iCloud。

我们看不到你练了什么、说了什么、得了多少分。

## 唯一的例外：你主动发的意见反馈

「意见反馈」只在你按下「发送」的那一刻发送一次。发出去的只有：你自己写的文字、你自己选的截图（可选），以及四项诊断信息：App 版本、机型、系统版本、界面语言。不含录音、不含练习内容，不记录 IP、没有任何设备标识，也不和任何身份关联，不用于追踪或广告。发送前那一页会把这些逐条写清楚。不点发送，就什么都不会发生。

## 购买与订阅

购买与订阅由 Apple 处理，我们不接触你的支付信息，也拿不到你的 Apple 账户。App 只从 App Store 读回「这个设备上有没有有效的 Pro 权益」这一个事实。

## 儿童

Unscript 不面向 13 岁以下儿童，也不会在知情的情况下收集他们的任何信息。事实上它不收集任何人的信息。

判定按发音等价：Li 和 Lee 听起来一样就算对，too / two / to 也一样，42 和 forty-two 也对得上。真遇到判错的词，用意见反馈把那句话发过来，我们会修规则。

需要 iPhone 与 iOS 17 或更高版本。iPad 可以用 iPhone 兼容模式运行，暂时没有原生 iPad 版。

A 580 on the national college English exam. Day one abroad, three minutes at a Starbucks counter, and not one coffee ordered.

Not because the words were missing. Because the head was translating and the mouth couldn't keep up. Twelve years of English class, and not one lesson on the thing that mattered at that counter: getting a complete sentence out while someone waits for the answer.

### A 580, and no coffee

580 out of 710 on the CET-6, the national English exam that Chinese university students take. Two reading questions wrong, a few points off on translation, listening slightly above average. By the school's standard, this is a student whose English is "pretty good".

First day in another country, standing at the Starbucks counter. The barista says "What can I get for you?" and the brain starts its procedure: translate what was said into Chinese, confirm it was understood, translate the intended reply back into English, check the grammar, arrange the word order, and then—

The people behind have started to form a line.

In the end a finger points at a picture on the menu, and one word comes out: "This."

This is not a joke. Search "first day abroad" in any Chinese English-learning forum and there are enough of these posts to fill a book. The details vary; the scene never does. Someone who did fine on exams discovers, in a real situation that requires speaking, that their English is read-only.

### Twelve years of English class trained the eyes, not the mouth

Counting from third grade, when English class begins for most Chinese students, to university graduation, that is at least twelve years of English. Counting from first grade or kindergarten, as many families do, it is more than fifteen.

Nobody has counted how many English exam papers a student completes in those years, how many words they memorise, how many grammar rules they learn. But one thing is close to certain: across the entire twelve years, **the number of times a student is required to say a complete stretch of English to another person is, in all likelihood, in the single digits.**

The reason is not complicated. English education in China is designed around exams, and exams need standardised grading. Reading comprehension has a right answer. Grammar fill-in-the-blanks has a right answer. Cloze passages have a right answer. Speaking doesn't.

A teacher can grade a reading question in under a minute. A spoken answer has to be listened to in real time, judged for grammar and meaning in real time, scored in real time. Fifty students in a class, two minutes each: the listening alone takes nearly two hours.

**It is not that teachers don't want to teach speaking. The system never left room for it.** Exams decide what is taught, teaching decides what happens in the classroom, and the classroom decides what students practise. End to end, this system is optimised for grading efficiency, not for the ability to communicate.

This is where cause and effect got flipped. The story we were told: grammar and vocabulary are the foundation of a language, so we teach them first. The actual story: grammar and vocabulary are the easiest things to turn into multiple-choice questions, multiple-choice questions are the easiest things to grade at scale, so the whole system has revolved around them for decades. The result was repackaged as the reason. The means was promoted to the goal.

### 400 million people, 5 percent

In 2014 a widely cited figure put the number of people in China who had studied English at around 400 million, with the country's English proficiency ranking second to last among Asia's major economies. Those able to hold a conversation in English without difficulty: no more than 5 percent.

Five percent of 400 million is 20 million. Put another way, the other 380 million learned, but did not learn to do it. At least not to speak.

Of those 380 million, how many can read an English news article? Probably quite a few. Follow an English podcast? Some. But open their mouth in a real situation and say a complete sentence while someone waits for it?

The people who can do that are rare enough to be praised as "good at English".

In 2023 China's English training industry was worth more than 100 billion yuan, roughly 14 billion US dollars. That figure does not include the school system itself: public-school English teachers' salaries, textbooks, the cost of running the exams. Those are paid by the state and are not counted in the market size.

**An industry that takes in over 100 billion yuan a year, whose core output, "can this person talk to someone in English", passes fewer than 5 percent.** If this were a product, it would have been recalled long ago.

### You think you're missing words. You're missing the exit.

Most people blame "not enough vocabulary" for not being able to speak. That is another reversed cause.

Linguistics has a basic pair of terms: receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary. You know a word, you see it and understand it: that is receptive. You can bring it out yourself while speaking: that is productive.

A student who has passed the CET-6 has a receptive vocabulary of roughly 5,000 to 6,000 words. Productive? Possibly a third of that, or less. And everyday English conversation does not actually need much. Research has suggested that the 2,000 most frequent word families cover more than 90 percent of ordinary speech.

The problem was never that you don't know enough words. The problem is that the words you know have never been through the step of being said out loud, under pressure.

Cognitive psychology calls this retrieval practice. If you only look at something repeatedly (recognition), the memory stays shallow. If you are required to actively recall it and produce it (retrieval), the memory goes much deeper. A vocabulary app's "see the English, pick the meaning" trains recognition. "It's your turn in the conversation, pull the word out of memory and say it" trains retrieval.

In twelve years of English education, we did recognition practice countless times and retrieval practice almost never.

### The 580 and that cup of coffee

Back to the Starbucks counter.

The student with the 580 knows how to spell latte, knows that large means the big one, knows that "Can I have…" is a legitimate sentence frame. All of it is in there, stored intact.

What is missing is not knowledge. It is the path. Between knowing and saying there is a stretch of road that has never been walked. In twelve years, not one class practised this one thing: with someone waiting and no prompt to look at, get a sentence out of your mouth.

There is a way to design it the other way round. Not "finish learning, then speak", but speak from day one: start by reading the line off the page, then see a little less of the script each time, until you can say it with nothing to look at. Language teaching calls this scaffolding fading. Give the learner full support, then remove it piece by piece until they can stand on their own.

This is not a new theory. Pimsleur was doing it in the 1960s. But in China's English classrooms it has almost never been tried, because you cannot turn it into a multiple-choice question.

The coffee did get ordered in the end. Reportedly, a Chinese student further back in the line stepped up and did the talking.

# 4 亿人学英语 12 年，能开口的不到 5%

四六级考了 580 分，出国第一天在星巴克站了三分钟，一杯咖啡没点出来。

不是不会那些单词。是脑子里在翻译，嘴跟不上。12 年英语课，没有一堂课练过「在别人等着你回答的时候，把一句完整的话说出来」这件事。

### 580 分，点不了一杯咖啡

四六级 580 分。阅读理解错两道，翻译扣了几分，听力中等偏上。按学校的标准，这是「英语不错」的学生。

出国第一天，站在星巴克柜台前，店员说了一句 "What can I get for you?"，大脑瞬间启动了一套流程：先把对方的话翻译成中文，确认听懂了，再把想说的中文翻译成英文，检查语法，组织语序，然后——

后面的人已经开始排队了。

最后用手指着菜单上的图片，说了一个词：this。

这不是段子。在英语学习社区里搜「出国第一天」，这类帖子多到可以出一本合集。细节各有不同，场景高度一致：一个在考试中表现不错的人，在需要开口的真实场景里，突然发现自己的英语是「只读」的。

### 12 年英语课，练的是眼睛不是嘴

从小学三年级开始算，到大学毕业，中国学生学英语至少 12 年。如果从一年级甚至幼儿园算起，很多人超过 15 年。

这 12 年里，一个学生做过多少份英语试卷、背过多少个单词、学过多少条语法规则，没有人统计过。但有一件事几乎可以确定：在整个 12 年的英语教育里，**被要求「对着一个人说出一段完整英语」的次数，大概率不超过个位数。**

原因不复杂。中国的英语教育是围绕考试设计的，而考试需要标准化评分。阅读理解有标准答案，语法填空有标准答案，完形填空有标准答案。口语没有。

一道阅读题，一个老师一分钟能改完。一段口语回答，要一个老师实时听、实时判断语法和语义、实时给分。一个班 50 个学生，每人说两分钟，光听就要将近两个小时。

**不是老师不想教口语，是这套系统从一开始就没有为「开口说」留下位置。** 考试决定教学，教学决定课堂，课堂决定学生在练什么。从头到尾，这套体系优化的是阅卷效率，不是交流能力。

这就是因果被掉转的地方：不是「语法和词汇是学英语的基础，所以先教这些」。是「语法和词汇最容易出选择题，选择题最容易大规模批改，所以整个教育系统围绕它们运转了几十年」。结果被包装成了原因，手段被神化成了目的。

### 4 亿人，5%

2014 年，一份被广泛引用的统计显示：中国有约 4 亿人学过英语，英语熟练度在亚洲主要经济体中排名倒数第二。能进行无障碍英语交流的人不超过 5%。

4 亿乘以 5%，是 2000 万人。换句话说，剩下的 3.8 亿人，学了但没学会——至少没学会说。

这 3.8 亿人里，有多少人能读懂一篇英文新闻？可能不少。能听懂一段英文播客？也有一些。但要在真实场景里开口、在别人等着你回答的时候说出一段完整的话？

能做到这一点的人，少到可以被当成「英语好」来夸。

2023 年中国英语培训行业市场规模超过 1000 亿元。这个数字还不包括学校教育本身的投入——公立学校的英语教师薪资、教材费用、考试组织成本，这些由财政承担，没有统计在市场规模里。

**一个每年投入千亿级资金的行业，产出的核心指标——「能不能用英语跟人说话」——通过率不到 5%。** 如果这是一个产品，它早该被召回了。

### 你以为缺的是单词，其实缺的是「出口」

很多人把「开不了口」归结为「词汇量不够」。这是另一个被颠倒的因果。

语言学里有一组基本概念：receptive vocabulary（接收词汇）和 productive vocabulary（产出词汇）。你认识一个词，看到它知道是什么意思，这叫接收。你能在说话的时候主动用出来，这叫产出。

一个通过 CET-6 的学生，接收词汇量大约在 5000–6000 之间。但产出词汇量呢？可能只有接收的三分之一甚至更少。日常英语对话需要的核心词汇其实不多——有研究认为，最高频的 2000 词就能覆盖日常对话 90% 以上的场景。

问题从来不是你认识的词不够多。问题是你认识的那些词，从来没有经过「在压力下说出来」这道工序。

认知心理学里管这叫 retrieval practice（提取练习）：你学一个东西，如果只是反复看它（再认），记忆很浅；但如果你被要求主动回忆并说出来（提取），记忆会深得多。背单词 App 里的「看英文选中文」练的是再认。「在一段对话里，轮到你说的时候，从记忆里提取出那个词并说出来」练的才是提取。

12 年英语教育里，我们做了无数次再认练习，几乎没做过提取练习。

### 580 分和那杯咖啡

回到星巴克那个柜台前。

580 分的学生知道 latte 怎么拼、知道 large 是大杯、知道 "Can I have..." 是一个合法的句式。这些知识全在脑子里，储存完好。

缺的不是知识，是通路。从「知道」到「说出来」之间，有一段路从来没走过。12 年里没有一堂课专门练这件事：在别人等着你的时候，不看任何提示，把一句话从嘴里说出来。

有一个思路是反过来设计——不是先学完再说，而是从第一天就开口，从照着读开始，一遍比一遍少看提示，直到什么都不看也能说出来。语言教学里管这叫 scaffolding fading（脚手架渐撤）：先给你全部的支撑，然后一点一点撤掉，直到你自己站住。

这不是什么新理论。Pimsleur 在 1960 年代就这么干了。但在中国的英语课堂里，这条路几乎从没被走过——因为它没法出选择题。

那杯咖啡后来还是点到了。据说是排在后面的一位中国留学生帮着说的。
